Dear reader, what is your favorite sign of spring? How do you know the season is changing? Is it the sudden radiance of the sun in a pale blue sky? Is it a new birdsong? Is it eggs in nests, blossoms in bloom, green things peeking through the earth, the steady dripping of the thaw? Is it bare legs and open-toed shoes?
Is it a rabbit scurrying by with a rucksack of contraband treacle?
Who's to say?
At any rate, I wanted to share with you just such a sign of spring. This is actually one of my favorite prints. I have a copy in Caroline's room and it slays me every time I look at it. Maybe it's her broomstick pigtails, maybe it's those shifty-eyed bunnies. Maybe it's the colors--the faded pastels remind me of a Polaroid photo from childhood, slightly overexposed and yellowed with age.
I think it also has something to do with their ill-fated tea with the queen. When I looked through the archives to find their story I must admit I was rather disappointed to discover it was just a hasty summary. For some reason I thought I'd written it out properly...but it's still good. It will still make you smile. You just have to use your imagination a bit more.
At any rate, the interesting thing is: no one ever purchases this print. And yet it is so delightful! So I feel duty bound at this enchanting time of year to send one out into the world whether anyone wants it or not.
If you would like to play along, please leave a comment at the bottom of this post. Perhaps tell me your favorite sign of spring. Do you have a rite of spring? Something to mark the passage into this new, lovely, awakening time of year? I would love to hear all about it...
