The other day I was walking with Caroline to school as she regaled me with thoughts of the future. We both agreed this was her time of life to explore as many interests as possible, with the thought of distinguishing between passions and hobbies further on down the road.
"My cello is definitely a passion," she told me, "So is volleyball. I want to hang onto both for as long as I can."
I nodded, wondering if I should be writing this down.
"Art...is more of a hobby," she continued, "I always want to draw but I don't think it can take up all my time.
"That's the great thing about hobbies," I said, "They fit in where they fit in."
"Baking...I guess that's also a hobby. For now."
"What about Charles Portis?," I asked.
She looked at me and smiled.
"Definitely a passion."
